A Floetic Night With The Floacist…

In Daily Musings on May 15, 2013 at 1:24 pm

Today I introduce my very first guest writer on Maylana’s Closet.  I am proud to introduce Ms Althea Anderson, who is a prolific writer in her own right.  Ms Anderson hails from East London in England, and is one of the original Sylista’s who ever entered my life, because she is also my big sister.  Below in her own words, Althea describes in beautiful detail, her night at the Jazz Cafè while, attending the performance of The Floacist.

Blog Family, please welcome Ms. Anderson to the blogging stage.

Natalie Stewart ~ Floacist

I have heard it said, that there are angels who walk the earth in the form of man.  The gift they possess, enlightens us on a daily basis; ensuring that we constantly look for the good within, they help us to remember our true purpose on this earth, which is to “Know Thyself” and be all we are supposed to be.  One such angel is called Floacist.

On Sunday 28th April, my sweetheart and I had the pleasure of attending the only concert in London, her first on home soil in 7 years, I might add! For now I will leave you with just one word PHENOMINAL!

Who is she?  A quick induction for you: Originating from South London, singer, songwriter, and poet Natalie Stewart, the original member and founder of the group Floetry, invited her friend Marsha Ambrosius on stage to perform with her.  The combination of poetry and singing was an immediate success, and with that Floetry was born.

A hop skip and jump to the U.S., and two successful albums were released.  “Floetic”  in 2002 and “Flo’Ology” in 2005, both with memorable tracks “Say Yes” and “Supa Star” being the chart toppers. With the parting of ways in 2006, Stewart formed a production company producing successful plays, and threw in some acting of her own.  Metamorphosing into Floacist, with two beautiful albums; “Floetic Soul” in 2010, and “The Floacist Presents – Floetry Re-Birthin 2012. We now fast forward to the Jazz Café in London.

Ladies in heels; guys with beautiful locs, and cameras poised in anticipation; the atmosphere was electric as I gazed around.  Being a scribe myself (I love that description), I was anxious to witness a true priestess in full flow.  A roaring introduction, synchronized with 3 backing singers, bongos, piano and guitar bring her to the stage.  Opening with ‘Children of the Sun’ everyone connects, the journey begins…  “Slow Down” eases us along our way, as we absorb the words of wisdom, and melody…  Everyone starts swaying “doodaadoodaaadaaada…” Speechless!  Fantastic!  Time travelled and 9.15 p.m. turned into 11.00 p.m. Encore!

Floacist’s gift of rhetoric is breath-taking, poetry was created in its purest form, from the soul, blessings were had…  Consider me blessed!

Meshell Ndegeochello’s Tribute To Nina Simone…

In Daily Musings on October 12, 2012 at 9:30 am

One of my all time favourite recording artists, Meshell Ndegeochello, has paid tribute to Ms. Nina Simone by releasing a new album titled ” Pour une âme souveraine {For a Sovereign Soul}.  This disc is a collaboration with artists such as Sinead O’Connor, Cody Chestnut, Toshi Reagon, among other well-known talent.

This venture will consist of covers and adaptations of Nina’s most famous songs, such as “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” {fantastic cover by Cody Chestnut}, “Four Women” and “Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” I’m loving track 8 with Lizz Wright, “Nobody’s Fault But Mine

Meshell has been one of my favourites from her first album “Plantation Lullabies“, when I was working in the Music industry and she was on Madonna’s Maverick record label, which was owned by the label I worked for.  What I’ve always admired about Meshell, was she never conformed to record industry standards, but always played to her own tune.  She is now with small French indie jazz label, Naive, where I’m sure she’s a whole lot happier.

Meshell will be appearing at The Howard Theatre in Washington, DC, October, 14.  Catch her if you can.

Do You Have Your Rocks???

In Daily Musings on February 16, 2012 at 10:18 am

Tsion Rocks that is!  Tsion (pronounced Zion) Rocks is a line of semi-precious beaded jewelry created by renowned artist Ms. Yvette Crocker.  She calls them wearable art and yes they are!  Tsion Rocks has taken off like wildfire.  Yvette decided to put her beautiful art, which she paints on wood on hiatus, while she channeled some of her other artistic abilities.  To see her art pieces, pay a visit to her online gallery @  www.yvettecrocker.com

From her first bracelet, Yvette started a stampede on Facebook, with everyone from DC, New York, New Jersey, Atlanta and everywhere  in between and beyond, wanting to purchase their own rocks. If you blink, you’ll miss them!  Tsion Rocks Bracelets and necklaces (there are earrings too) are made up of Amethyst, Turquoise, Coral, Onyx, Pink Agate, the list of crystals and stones she uses goes on and on.  Yvette sources the most unusual beads from all over the world.  Ms. Crocker also has a bespoke line, where she uses real diamond beads to create her luxury items, and what beautiful  luxuries they are!  Yvette likes to take high-end vintage pieces, pull them apart and then create a one of a kind statement piece mixed in with her crystal beads.  Is this woman an artist or what!

Tsion Rocks bracelets and necklaces are worn by multi-platinum artists such as Kanye West, Raheem DeVaugh, among many others.  Sports stars such as  Vernon Davis and Patrick Willis  are flocking to Tsion Rocks; buying in multiples because they can’t get enough.  Many from the entertainment and sports elite are rushing to get their  own pieces.

The crème de la crème was when Tsion Rocks bracelets were presented as a gift to our First Lady of The United States, Michelle Obama, which also included a bracelet for each of her daughters.  For me that was Yvette’s shining moment.  When the wife of the President is wearing your jewelry you have arrived! Especially the wife of this President! Even her  gift packaging smacks of class. Your item is placed in a velvet pouch and an exquisite tin box which is then wrapped up with a gorgeous grosgrain bow.

Get yours!
