A Floetic Night With The Floacist…

In Daily Musings on May 15, 2013 at 1:24 pm

Today I introduce my very first guest writer on Maylana’s Closet.  I am proud to introduce Ms Althea Anderson, who is a prolific writer in her own right.  Ms Anderson hails from East London in England, and is one of the original Sylista’s who ever entered my life, because she is also my big sister.  Below in her own words, Althea describes in beautiful detail, her night at the Jazz Cafè while, attending the performance of The Floacist.

Blog Family, please welcome Ms. Anderson to the blogging stage.

Natalie Stewart ~ Floacist

I have heard it said, that there are angels who walk the earth in the form of man.  The gift they possess, enlightens us on a daily basis; ensuring that we constantly look for the good within, they help us to remember our true purpose on this earth, which is to “Know Thyself” and be all we are supposed to be.  One such angel is called Floacist.

On Sunday 28th April, my sweetheart and I had the pleasure of attending the only concert in London, her first on home soil in 7 years, I might add! For now I will leave you with just one word PHENOMINAL!

Who is she?  A quick induction for you: Originating from South London, singer, songwriter, and poet Natalie Stewart, the original member and founder of the group Floetry, invited her friend Marsha Ambrosius on stage to perform with her.  The combination of poetry and singing was an immediate success, and with that Floetry was born.

A hop skip and jump to the U.S., and two successful albums were released.  “Floetic”  in 2002 and “Flo’Ology” in 2005, both with memorable tracks “Say Yes” and “Supa Star” being the chart toppers. With the parting of ways in 2006, Stewart formed a production company producing successful plays, and threw in some acting of her own.  Metamorphosing into Floacist, with two beautiful albums; “Floetic Soul” in 2010, and “The Floacist Presents – Floetry Re-Birthin 2012. We now fast forward to the Jazz Café in London.

Ladies in heels; guys with beautiful locs, and cameras poised in anticipation; the atmosphere was electric as I gazed around.  Being a scribe myself (I love that description), I was anxious to witness a true priestess in full flow.  A roaring introduction, synchronized with 3 backing singers, bongos, piano and guitar bring her to the stage.  Opening with ‘Children of the Sun’ everyone connects, the journey begins…  “Slow Down” eases us along our way, as we absorb the words of wisdom, and melody…  Everyone starts swaying “doodaadoodaaadaaada…” Speechless!  Fantastic!  Time travelled and 9.15 p.m. turned into 11.00 p.m. Encore!

Floacist’s gift of rhetoric is breath-taking, poetry was created in its purest form, from the soul, blessings were had…  Consider me blessed!

Maylana's Closet

Hello Dahhlings!  The photo above {captured by me on my trusty iPhone},  is what I woke up to this morning.  This being the 5th day of spring, the joke is still on us.  Though pretty and looking much like a Norman Rockwell painting, this is not what we would normally expect for the last week in March.

I hope you had yourselves a fabulous weekend, and you’re ready and rearing to go for the upcoming week.

Just remember; blue skies are somewhere on the horizon.

Hello Dahhlings! I hope you had a fabulous weekend, I know I certainly did. What’s made it even more so, is today is a  holiday in the U.S., so we have one more day to relax and take it easy (kind of!).  Most of my weekend was spent Skyping with my sister in London, discussing where we’re taking our company and searching for all the goodies we plan to present to you soon.  Isn’t Skype the most amazing thing! I absolutely love it.

The Secret

I’m in a really great place in my life, I feel like I’m going through a transition which has nothing but positive vibes attached to it.  I’ve decided to reread the book “The Secret” which I bought back in 2007, for some reason the book is having more of an impact on me now, than it did when I first read it.  I think I’m more mentally and spiritually ready for it now.  If you are not familiar with “The Secret” it discusses the Law of Attraction and how to bring what it is you truly seek into your life. We are what we think! If you’d like to learn more about “The Secret” click here.

What books are you reading right now, to help motivate and inspire you? I’d love to know.

Maylana

I love taking self photos with my iPhone, mostly to post to my Instagram, Facebook and Tumbler accounts.  Here’s a collage I created on Saturday, showcasing a beautiful dress my sister gave me for my birthday, and some indian earrings I acquired while there.

This week will be yet another busy week, more hat orders to complete, baby wear being completed {by the wonderful Althea}, and buying and cataloguing inventory for the Maylana’s Closet Boutique.  I’m happy to say I love being this kind of busy.

Have yourselves the most Amazing, Inspired and Fabulous week!

Irving Penn, Photographer Extraordinaire…

In Daily Musings on January 11, 2013 at 2:54 pm

irving2.jpg Miles Davis

I’ve always loved the photography of Irving Penn. I love to admire the black and white sharpness of most of his work; the poses of his subjects against a white or grey background. Everything is sharp and angular.  For me, the one of Miles Davis above, captures it all;  the darkness of his skin against the whites of his nails, makes for such a strong and powerful image. Irving Penn was able to capture the heart and soul of this complicated and spirited musician.

You really cannot mistake a Irving Penn photograph for any other. He was one of the top photographers of his time.  Irving Penn photographed his first cover for Vogue magazine in 1943 and continued to work at the magazine throughout his career, shooting covers, portraits, still life, fashion, and photographic essays. Irving Penn passed away in 2009 at the age of 92.

Here is a small collection of some of my favourites.

Crochet Away!

Toffee

Even with the excitement of my impending departure to London, I am crocheting my little heart out.  It seems my customers (new and old) have realized I’m going away for a little while, and I’m receiving orders for my crochet hats left and right!.  I’m always on the look out for unusual crochet hooks and found the ones below on a site called Simply Art. The hooks above are hand carved in India; I think they’re simply gorgeous! I’ll be ordering a set when I return.

I’ve completed quite a few orders today and I’m pooped!

Warning! This post will be a mish mash of thoughts, images and inspiration.

Thought For The Day ~ It’s been a tough long week, decisions had to be made in order for peace of mind to be had.  Always remember to never ever sell yourself short.  There is not enough money on earth for you to sacrifice your self-respect.  Always go with what you are truly feeling. Short changing yourself pays you nothing!

Working my fingers to complete hats, cowls and scarves… Stay tuned.

Beautiful

I posted this image, not because of the model {though she is attractive}, but to me it’s a perfect black and white photograph.  Add a Burberry trench, and  a Birkin bag… Classic! For me this photo screams Chic!

Happy Monday Dahhlings! I hope you had an amazing weekend.  Mine was contemplative and peaceful.  I’m totally loving this Anya Hindmarch shopper.  What a stylish way to carry the obligatory magazines and newspapers.  Unfortunately its’ no longer available; but you can contact the fashion advisers at Net-a-Porter who may be able make an alternative suggestion for you.  Click here

What are you reading today?

I’m coming to the end of “The 500” by Matthew Quirk.  He is a relatively new author, and I’ll have to say, he really took off with this debut book.  Absolutely loving it!! If you’re a fan of James Patterson {which I am}, you’ll love the pace of this thriller.  Find it here at Amazon.

I’d love to wish you an Inspiring, Creative and Incredible week; and ladies remember to tell yourself…

A Colourful Wednesday…

In Daily Musings on September 12, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Happy Wednesday Dahhlings!  We’re half way there, speeding towards the weekend; so to help you along, I’m sending some cheerful colour into your life.

I Found this gorgeous shot on Pinterest and had to post it for you.  I felt the colours were amazing with her exotic almond shaped eyes, and decided that all this sparkle, was just the thing to perk you up, and help you through the next 2 days. WE’RE NEARLY THERE!

I need your help; can anyone think of another term for Wednesday instead of “hump day“?  I really dislike that term!  Isn’t there something more fun and a little more chic we could use?

Harry And The Rings…

In Daily Musings, New Loves!, Object's of Desire on September 11, 2012 at 6:44 am

I met a lovely young lady recently, who was wearing the most gorgeous ring on a chain around her neck.  The reason said ring is placed there, is because she is 8 months pregnant, and therefore it’s not comfortable to wear at this time.  When I asked her about it, she told me her uncle in law created it for her.  Well… What an absolute treasure this turned out to be.

Who is her uncle? His name is Harry Roa, a fantastic jewelry designer based in Sarasota Florida.  Harry is the designer and owner of Harry Roa Jewelry Design Studio and Gallery {click here}, as well as the OceanLily jewelry boutique which carry his limited editions on Etsy {click here}.

All of his designs are handcrafted using a combination lost wax process and fabrication.  Harry uses Palladium, which is more precious than silver, whiter and lighter than platinum.  Palladium is also a tarnish free metal. He also works with 14K gold.

Each piece of wearable art {and they truly are!} is embellished with quality precious gemstones and diamonds.  Mr. Roa does not produce any molds of any of his pieces; therefore, making each piece a one of a kind. If you’d like to contact Harry in order to commission a special piece, you can contact him via his website.

The ring above is called PS In The Evening ~ That’s the one I have my eye on, it is beyond GORGEOUS!!!

If you do nothing else today, visit Harry’s websites. Each piece is absolutely Stunning!

All images/designs are the properties of Harry Roa Studio and OceanLily Studio
