Vintage Military Jacket - Hand Embroidered

Hello darlings! I hope you had a lovely weekend.  Mine was absolutely gorgeous, fantastic weather, scoops of ice cream, with lots of sun.  Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the Capital Jazz Fest, but I used the time wisely by getting a lot of projects completed, that really did need my immediate attention.

One of the projects I finally completed, was to list this gorgeous hand embroidered military jacket, painstakingly hand sewn by the wonderful Ms. Althea Anderson in London.  You may remember Ms. Anderson, who wrote the wonderful guest blog post: “A Floetic Night With Floetry” click here to read her superb account of what must have been a beautiful and enchanting night.  As you can see, she is a woman with many talents!

You can find this unique and one of a kind jacket in the Maylana’s Closet Etsy boutique. Shop Here  The jacket will also be available in the “Blog Shop” within the next few days.

Wishing you a Fabulous and Productive week!

Monday Musings!

A Monday Muse

Happy Monday Luvvies! Isn’t time flying! Already it’s the first week of May; very soon, we’re going to blink and it’ll be Memorial weekend, are you ready?  It’s the Spring bank holiday in the UK, so the family back home have the day off {lucky them!}.  I hope you had a fabulous weekend.

My weekend was spent donating clothing and thrifting.  It was time to clean out my closets, and get rid of things I know I’ll never ever wear again; remember one woman’s cast offs is another women’s treasure.  It takes me a really long time to donate my clothes, because I’ve donated items in the past, and then a year later, gone to look for that particular item to style it a certain way, because I was inspired by something I saw in a magazine, only to realize I no longer have it!  I did pick up a few goodies, of which, I did not have time to take photos of; I’ll try to post something for you soon.  I’m truly addicted to vintage shopping, at least I know, no one else will be wearing what I’ve bought!

Wishing you a fantastic week, see you soon!

And remember…

Vintage Coat

On Sunday, the most amazing afro caught my eye, and that’s how  I met the most unique and extraordinary woman by the name of Makkah, who is the owner of Revolution Vintage in Baltimore.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I was in Baltimore, and happened to stumble upon this charming little boutique.  While there, Makkah and I struck up a lovely conversation, whereby, I purchased what I thought was one of the most beautiful vintage coats.  Makkah offered me the most wonderful deal, once I told her I was a blogger, which I could not pass up, so wonderful in fact, I dare not tell you how much!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The best way to describe Makkah’s boutique, is it’s a delightful bazaar of unusual and eclectic finds; like a Magpies’ nest of colourful and shiny things, you don’t know what you should look at first.  A hodge podge mix of vintage dresses, coats and scarves hung on coat racks and laid across old fashion sofas, fabulous accessories spilled on a dresser for good measure.  As you can see, Makkah herself is a stunning vision of colours, and creativity, exuding the most artistic of auras.  I found her when the market was nearly closing, because I’m sure I could have spent half the day with her if I had found her earlier.

You can find the lovely Makkah on Instagram @revolutionvintage, where she has some of the most amazing photos, or if you’re in the area, visit her boutique at the Patapsco Indoor Flea Market in Baltimore.  It’s so worth it!

Maylana's Closet

Yesterday, I posted a couple of pieces, I found at my favourite vintage store; I forgot to post this gorgeous black slip and peach coloured ballerina style nightgown, that I thought you’d love to see.  I’m going to try the peach gown with a knee-length tank dress, belt it and maybe an additional vintage petticoat underneath to see how that works.  I’ll let you know 🙂

A young lady I met, while shopping, picked up these beauties for $5!!

It’s another gorgeous day, a little chilly, but I’ll take it, because the sun is shining very brightly!

Hello fabulous people.  This morning truly looked like spring had finally sprung! After a gorgeous Saturday, a grey and dreary Sunday, today truly is starting out to be absolutely gorgeous.  Can we finally exhale our collective breaths that spring has arrived?

french connection dress dual

I had a terrific weekend, I went scouting for vintage finds, at one of my favourite spots in Maryland, and came across a few goodies.  I found this gorgeous brand new sequined French Connection dress, with tags, which retailed last season for $248, selling for under $100,!!!  Alas, it was not in the Maylana’s Closet budget!

Liz Claibourne

I also found this gorgeous Liz Claiborne ankle length coat dress for under $5!!  I have not been a fan of Liz Claiborne for a number of years now, but this dress was too fantastic to resist.  I’m going to wear this unbuttoned up to the thigh with shorts underneath, cinched at the waist with ankle strap flats or high heels depending on my mood, and then paired with a colourful clutch. Very 50’s.

Those of you who follow my blog, know I love Instagram {as well as Pinterest!}; here are some of my weekend images. If you’d like to follow me on IG, you can find me @Maylana.

I hope your Easter weekend, was as blessed, fabulous and productive as mine.  Wishing you a Glorious Monday and a Fantastic and Amazing week.

Before & After…

In Daily Musings on May 22, 2012 at 12:01 pm

I bought this vintage mirror a couple of years ago, with the intention of repainting it.  Alas it has moved around  my living room numerous times, before I finally relented and decided enough was enough.

I’ve always loved the blue of Tiffany boxes and I was determined to find the colour, which I did a couple of weeks ago in Home Depot.

Here is the finished product.  I won’t say it was a joy painting this mirror, As an Aquarian,  I love instant gratification, and this was NOT instant enough for me, but I persevered and I’m now the proud owner of a gorgeously painted mirror.

BTW: You may have noticed that there are now ads on my blog, I’ve been accepted as part of the WordPress AdWords Beta program.  AdWords is Google’s flagship advertising product, which can become a source of reveue (please click); so just in case you were wondering, there you are.

Weekend Wanderings…

In Daily Musings on May 14, 2012 at 9:50 am

Hi fabulous people, I hope you had a beautiful weekend, because I most certainly did, I have minor sunburn to prove it.  The weather was absolutely gorgeous here, 80 degrees, blue skies and sunshine.  My weekend started off fantastic because it was The Great Yard Sale for my neighbourhood; where many homeowners participate in one massive garage sale. I love yard sales, you can find the most amazing items for next to nothing. Seventy one homes participated, where there were lots of goodies to be found everywhere.

I met some really friendly and amazing people while I was out and about, Chereeka was one of them.  When I came across Ms. Diva sitting on her porch with some beautiful items for sale, I just had to stop and take a photo of this beautiful necklace she bought in Pakistan.  Now isn’t this a statement piece or what!

Because of my interest, she went inside her home and brought out this turquoise beauty, which she bought in Istanbul and kindly allowed me to try on; I fell in love instantly because it was perfect with the strapless jumpsuit I was wearing; and no she was not selling any of these. Would you?

I’ve been looking for an old fashion typewriter for display purposes for a while, and luckily I came across this gem and paid all of $7 bucks for it.  It needs cleaning up which I’m more than happy to do, it’s in good condition and still works.  For those of you old enough. do you remember learning to type on a manual or electric typewriter?  I couldn’t use one now to save my life, hence why this is just for show.  I’m so pleased I found this because I’ve searched eBay, and most people were asking ridiculous prices, sometimes up to $300!!! Please!

While going from house to house, I started taking pics of these gorgeous rose bushes, which surrounded a beautiful colonial style home on a corner lot.  While I was taking photos with my trusty iPhone, the grand dame of the house, Ms. Daisy (yes that is her name) came out and asked if I’d like a cutting.  Ms. Daisy came out with her gardening gloves and shears and started telling me the story of her rose bushes and taking care of them.  I was so touched by her kindness, I forgot to take a pic of Ms. Daisy, but here is a photo of one of her many rose bushes and my cutting.

So there you are darlings; a quick take of my weekend.  I picked up some gorgeous things, some of which you will see on my soon to be opened Etsy store and also on www.maylana.com.  I also had dinner at a new restaurant in my neighbourhood called Menomale Pizzeria, where my new friend above and another creative spirit named Nya, who designs jewelry. The three of us had the best pizza made from scratch ever! Watch out for a future post on Nya.  I’ll also write about the restaurant in another post, with the new cupcake store next door, which has also recently popped up.  My neighbourhood is a very happening place.

I’d like to wish you a fabulous. glorious and blessed week.

And remember ladies…

I’m talking about YOU!

A Bubble Gum Pink Wednesday…

In Daily Musings, New Loves! on April 11, 2012 at 9:44 am

Update 4/11:  It’s seems everyone is in love with my green Longchamp bag, which has overshadowed the pink clutch.  Thanks to everyone who complimented it. Unfortunately this colour came out about 3 years ago, therefore it is no longer available.  Longchamp always creates an extra special colour each season.  The colour I love right now is the orange, which will be a lovely pop of colour for the summer.  See collection here:   http://www.longchamp.com/en/le-pliage-women-255.html

This was supposed to have been yesterday’s post, but it was a long and crazy day of wearing many hats.  There are lots of exciting things happening, I’ll fill you in when everything has been confirmed.

I’ve added yet another vintage handbag to my ever-expanding collection. I received my lovely new vintage clutch from Adrian Company Vintage, who are located on Etsy.  Thanks Olga for the speedy shipping.   The clutch is a gorgeous bubble gum pink  and really soft.  This bag is definitely from the 70’s with its chevron stripe and wrist strap.

Do you remember your mum going out and  carrying one of these? If you ‘re a child of the 70’s like I am, then you certainly do!  It’s going to be one of my go to bags when I’m having a Diana Ross 1970’s moment.

Adrian Company Vintage has a lovely assortment of vintage clothing and accessories on Etsy; beautifully curated at great prices.
