Fancy - Pretty Woman Mirror

I subscribe to Fancy.com, online and on Instagram, and found this gorgeous piece of mirrored art during my morning scroll this morning.  I absolutely love it and know it would look fantastic with my decor at home.  Unfortunately, I am not willing to pay $555 for it… Wow!  It is a beauty though.  If you’re so inclined, you can find it here

Wishing you a Beautifully Blessed and Gorgeous day!

Candy Musings…

Daily Candy Goodbye

Oh my gosh Darlings! It’s been 2 weeks since my last post; life has been busy, busy, busy, with its highs, lows and the in betweens.

Since my last post, one of my all time favourite blogs, Daily Candy closed it’s doors for the last time on April 4.  I can’t believe it’s been fourteen years.  I remember the day they started, every fashionista worth her salt in New York, made sure she received her Candy emails, which was nothing more than a stylish newsletter at the time.  Daily Candy eventually branched out to other cities and countries and a blogging star was truly born.

I loved the artwork of the  original illustrator, SuJean Rim, who worked with the site for the first 12 years.  She captured the essence of a “Candy” girl.

I was working for a major record label, when Daily Candy made her debut back in the year 2000, bringing back great memories of living in New York City, and striding through Manhattan in 4″ stilettos.  Thank you Daily Candy for being one of the original daily blogs (you inspired me, and so many others), thanks for the broad range of new fashion designers, home goods, restaurants, daily deals (they were way ahead of Groupon) and many other niceties, you continuously brought our way.

Thank you for a fabulously chic ride, and for being a true pioneer in the blogasphere!

If I’m looking for words of inspiration and motivation, whether to use in my blog or just as a quick pick me up, I can always look to Pinterest for beautiful wording.  There are hundreds of boards with beautiful inspirational messages to inspire and motivate you.  Here are just a few of my favourites.

I could post so much more, but you’d be reading all day.  I hope you’ve found words of encouragement and/or inspiration among these treasures.  If you’d like to see more of my Quotes & Inspiration board on Pinterest, click here

The above collage titled “Love Flow” was created using the Bazaart app, which I wrote about in this post. I found out this morning that Bazaart retweeted it.  This is the second time, they’ve retweeted one of my collages {they retweeted my very first collage in the linked blog post}, this was a brilliant start to my day

I still plan to start the Bazaart gallery, as a collaboration with other bloggers and readers, I’d love to see what you’ve created.

Wishing you a Love & Light filled Wednesday

Do You Bazaart?

Bazaart #collage #art #inspire #Inspiration

I must confess, I have an addiction; an addiction to iTunes apps!  I have approximately 70+ apps on my iPhone and God knows how many I’ve accumulated on my iPad {and yes I use them all!!}  My lastest acquisition is Bazaart.  This amazing app works with Pinterest, and allows you to take your images from your various boards, and turn them into beautiful collages.  You can snip, move, rotate and more to your creative heart’s desire.

Above is my first foray into creating a collage with this app; I think I’m going to have it blown up, and framed {Ikea does some wonderful  frames}. Look out for more of my “works of art

Let me know what you think, if you download the app, maybe I’ll create a Bazaart gallery to display our collective creativity.

Go to the iTunes store, where Bazaart is available as a free download. Click here.

Springtime In DC…

Hello Dahhlings!  The photo above {captured by me on my trusty iPhone},  is what I woke up to this morning.  This being the 5th day of spring, the joke is still on us.  Though pretty and looking much like a Norman Rockwell painting, this is not what we would normally expect for the last week in March.

I hope you had yourselves a fabulous weekend, and you’re ready and rearing to go for the upcoming week.

Just remember; blue skies are somewhere on the horizon.

Irving Penn, Photographer Extraordinaire…

In Daily Musings on January 11, 2013 at 2:54 pm

irving2.jpg Miles Davis

I’ve always loved the photography of Irving Penn. I love to admire the black and white sharpness of most of his work; the poses of his subjects against a white or grey background. Everything is sharp and angular.  For me, the one of Miles Davis above, captures it all;  the darkness of his skin against the whites of his nails, makes for such a strong and powerful image. Irving Penn was able to capture the heart and soul of this complicated and spirited musician.

You really cannot mistake a Irving Penn photograph for any other. He was one of the top photographers of his time.  Irving Penn photographed his first cover for Vogue magazine in 1943 and continued to work at the magazine throughout his career, shooting covers, portraits, still life, fashion, and photographic essays. Irving Penn passed away in 2009 at the age of 92.

Here is a small collection of some of my favourites.

TGIF… Really!!!

In Daily Musings on November 9, 2012 at 4:00 pm

It’s been a long stressful week, so, I’ve decided to post some random images with lots of colour; more to cheer me up than anything else; therefore, this post is a little self-indulgent (actually a lot :-)).  Here goes…  The poster above is an image featured by the Urban Forms Gallery, Lodz Poland. I’d love this in my living room… Yes really!!!

I love all the colours involved with this photograph.  Don’t you just love her hand jewelry? I’d love to obtain one of those for myself!!

African glam at it’s best! I want this dress! The only way to go to market!

I’m totally in love with this Zac Posen dress from his 2013 collection

I continue to get asked about this gorgeous wedding dress, which has generated some major bride envy.  Australian shoe queen, Terry Biviano’s mermaid inspired wedding gown, was designed by J’Aton. http://www.jatoncouture.com/ As I’ve said before this dress is simply stunning! See blog post here

“Bayala” by Isabelle Sauvineau Now here’s colour for you.  Absolutely beautiful piece of art (Copyright Isabelle Sauvineau)

Here’s a piece of art titled “Aquar’elle” by Adrien Donot, that really inspires me.  I think it’s the hair, the blackness of it against the rest of her and of course the Vidal Sassoon inspired bob. (Copyright Adrien Donot)

Choreographer, Fatima Robinson, always colourful in her dance.

Although this is not a colour image, the grace with which this child dances in the street, absorbed in his own colourful world, in my eyes makes him graceful and majestic.  He appears totally obsorbed in this one movement; the camera has caught him just right. Love this photo!

And always remember to tell yourself…

Because you are!

I hope these beautiful images brought some much-needed colour to your day; they did for me. I could have posted so much more, but this post would have gone on forever; maybe I’ll post more over the weekend.  I’d love to wish you an Amazing and Inspiring weekend.

FLOTUS As Wonder Woman!!

In Daily Musings on October 11, 2012 at 9:02 am

I just love this illustration by artist J. Bone, showing us his vision of First Lady, Michelle Obama depicted as Wonder Woman.  I’m a Wonder Woman fan {loved the outfit, and those boots!}, so to me this is a fitting tribute.  Read the full article which was posted in the Grio here

Wednesday With A Swirl…

In Daily Musings on August 22, 2012 at 9:37 am

I was a little hesitant to post this image as I have no idea who designed this stunning creation of a dress.  My sister always advises me, to try to post designer information whenever possible.  If anyone knows who the designer is, please let me know.

The fit; the beading, the swirl of the train, with its Pucciesque print {could it be Pucci?} is in a word… Gorgeous!  The print reminds me of the beautiful latte art some baristas are able to create with steaming milk; a skill in itself, which can take years to master.

For me it truly is, Wednesday with a swirl.

 Happy Wednesday Dahhlings!

Africa In Technicolour…

In Daily Musings on August 14, 2012 at 10:32 am

While perusing for ideas, I came across these gorgeous images relating to fashion, from the African diaspora.  The colours are simply stunning, which causes the images to simply pop from the page.  I’m totally loving the dress above. This couple looks like they just got married at city hall and are now about to paint the town every colour under the sun.

There are many wonderful designers coming out of the African continent, it’s time they had more of a visual presence throughout the fashion industry.

We need more of these fashions readily available to us here in the States.  If you design gorgeous garments, jewelry and/or accessories, please contact me at lana@maylana.com; I’d love to feature you on this blog.  See my blog post “Where Do You Sika” featuring designs by Phyllis Taylor the owner of Sika Designs, who is of Ghanaian descent and is based in London.  Click here.
