What I love about Instagram is that you meet and are able to follow the most interesting and creative people. One of these people is a beautiful woman by the name of Paola. Paola Mathe is a lifestyle blogger of Haitian descent based in New York City, but to me she is so much more than that. She is beautiful, talented and moves to the beat of her own drum. She exudes so much life and happiness, while embracing her rich Haitian culture. Paola appears to be enjoying every single minute of life. To me Paola is a woman who is living Boldly!
I have been following and collecting Paola’s Fanm Djanm (which means “Strong Woman”) head wraps for quite a while now. These gorgeous creations are a statement unto themselves. With their gorgeous colours and patterns, they are a sizable length, to create whatever style of head wrap you desire. To make even more of a bold statement, you can also purchase and add a head chain; these stunning pieces of head/hair jewelry will surely cause you to stand out from the crowd.
Paola is an entrepreneur and blogger who truly inspires me. Paola, you are a true Fanm Djanm!

Well Darlings, I for one, cannot wait for the release of the limited edition capsule collection from Banana Republic and Marimekko. Now this is a collaboration I can work with. I will have my Banana card at the ready, especially for the skirt above. I love a full midi skirt with side pockets, which is always a classic and timeless look.
Marimekko’s signature bold prints have graced clothes, fabrics, furniture, and tableware; and now Banana Republic has collaborated with the Finland based brand to come up with what in my opinion, will be a sell out collection {especially that skirt!}.
The two looks below are also on my radar, I’m loving those cropped pants!!
Set your smart phone/tablet a few days ahead, to remind you, the collection debuts in select stores and online May 22.

Have yourselves a beautifully chic day!

I love these images of Alek Wek who is the main feature in “As If Magazine“. The South Sudanese stunner is definitely one of my favourite models, ever since I saw her on the cover of Elle Magazine, back in 1997 {Wow… how time flies!}. Photography by Tatijana Shoan. As If Magazine is a large-format quarterly luxury publication, which is distributed nationally in major U.S. Cities. For more details click here.

I’ve always loved the photography of Irving Penn. I love to admire the black and white sharpness of most of his work; the poses of his subjects against a white or grey background. Everything is sharp and angular. For me, the one of Miles Davis above, captures it all; the darkness of his skin against the whites of his nails, makes for such a strong and powerful image. Irving Penn was able to capture the heart and soul of this complicated and spirited musician.
You really cannot mistake a Irving Penn photograph for any other. He was one of the top photographers of his time. Irving Penn photographed his first cover for Vogue magazine in 1943 and continued to work at the magazine throughout his career, shooting covers, portraits, still life, fashion, and photographic essays. Irving Penn passed away in 2009 at the age of 92.
Here is a small collection of some of my favourites.

I hope you have an amazing weekend, I’m finally going to start packing for my trip to London on Tuesday, it’s time to move everything I’m taking, from the sofa to the suitcase!

Though this book was released back in November 2011 {and I still haven’t purchased my own copy!}, it truly is one of the most gorgeous coffee table books around. With absolutely stunning images, taken in equally glamorous locations, by renowned fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier; he and the house of Dior have come together to chronicle some of the most beautiful and incredible haute couture.
The book takes us through a gorgeous pictorial voyage, through the history of the house of Dior. Beginning with Christian Dior, Yves Saint Lauren, Marc Bohan and ending with John Galliano. I had the chance to browse through this book earlier this year, and it truly is a stunning piece of art, worthy of any well-dressed coffee table.
This book will definitely go on my 2012 holiday wish list!

I’m loving this still photo from Solange’s latest music video for her upcoming single “Losing You“, which was shot in a township in South Africa. Local young men dressed in some rather dapper fashions are one of the highlights of the video.
Solange was inspired to shoot her video in South Africa because of the color in the architecture, the townships and the people. The new single has been described as “eclectic with ’80s references and African percussion influences.
I’ve always preferred Solange, I relate more to her sense of style, and I feel she’s someone I could really hang out with to shoot the breeze and talk about real style!
I’m looking forward to seeing the concept, the styling, and hearing the music from Solange’s new project.

I love this photo of Solange and her son in the colours splashed bedroom of her Brooklyn apartment, featured in the September issue of Elle Magazine
Have yourselves a Relaxing, Amazing and Extraordinary weekend!

While perusing for ideas, I came across these gorgeous images relating to fashion, from the African diaspora. The colours are simply stunning, which causes the images to simply pop from the page. I’m totally loving the dress above. This couple looks like they just got married at city hall and are now about to paint the town every colour under the sun.
There are many wonderful designers coming out of the African continent, it’s time they had more of a visual presence throughout the fashion industry.
We need more of these fashions readily available to us here in the States. If you design gorgeous garments, jewelry and/or accessories, please contact me at lana@maylana.com; I’d love to feature you on this blog.
