Oscar Nominee Lupita Nyong’o has taken Hollywood by storm and in my opinion by complete surprise.  Lupita is either gracing a magazine cover, complete with beautiful layouts, adorning gorgeous designer dresses.  She is winning every award, and deservedly so.  This Yale educated, beautiful and talented actress, is doing for black women, what Alek Wek did back in the early 90’s.  It is beautiful to see a beautiful, chocolate hued woman representing me in Hollywood.  It’s beautiful to see a woman whose hair is as short as mine, representing all black women who have chosen not to go the weave or wig route.

There is nothing wrong if you choose to wear weaves or wigs, but those of us with cropped, short or baldies tend to be shunned and not seen as beautiful.  Luckily I’ve always been very confident, therefore my short hair {sometimes baldie, depending on my mood} does not dictate who I am, though it is part of who I am as a woman.  I’ve just listened to Lupita’s graceful and moving speech on black beauty at the annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood event; for me it was extremely soul-stirring, moving and timely, I felt her speech deep down inside my soul.

Thank you Lupita, for your grace, your elegance and your extraordinary talent.  Thank you for sharing your own personal journey with your skin tone, and letting the world know, that you don’t have to be a light-skinned black woman, with a long flowing weave {or naturally long hair} to make it in this world.

Let’s wish Lupita the very best of luck at tonight’s Academy Awards Ceremony, she deserves every accolade.

And The Oscar Goes To…

Robin 2

Robin Roberts

Happy Monday Dahhlings!  Here are my personal highlights from last nights Academy Awards Ceremony.

I loved, loved Robin Robert’s dress, the stunning blue, which absolutely complimented her skin tone, and the ethereal glow, which I felt surrounded her.  Robin looked truly beautiful.  After everything she has been through with her health in the past year, she has shown that you truly can get through anything, and come out the other side… Shining!

Shirley Bassey

My heart swelled with pride when fellow Brit, Dame Shirley Bassey, graced the stage with one of her most famous songs “Gold Finger” from the James Bond movie of the same name, starring Sean Connery, released back in 1964.  Dame Shirley looked as fabulous tonight at 76 as she did back them, her pipes still as strong as ever.  Ms. Bassey received a standing ovation, which was richly deserved.

Charlize Theron

Another highlight for me was Ms. Charlize Thereon, with her short pixie haircut {channeling Mia Farrow} and elegant white Dior gown. To me she look graceful, chic and all around beautiful.  I think short hair becomes her.

Jennifer Hudson

And of course there was Ms. Jennifer Hudson with the Dream Girls classic “You’re Gonna Love Me“.  As always, Ms. Hudson sung with everything she had, to full effect.  I’m still amazed that this young woman did not win American Idol in the year she participated.  The good thing is, this was her springboard to fame and ultimately an Academy Award her first time out.

Adele belted out the theme song from “Skyfall”, scoring an Oscar for best original song while she was at it.  My other fellow Brit looked beautiful, her make up, immaculate as always.  I love Adele, she is such a down to earth Londoner, no airs and graces, what you see is what you get.

barbra-streisand

Last but not least, the incomparable Ms. Barbara Streisand sang the beautiful song “The Way We Were”  in memory of those who passed away within the film industry last year.  That particular song always moves me.

I thought I’d finished editing this post last night, when who should appear on my TV screen, but FLOTUS herself, making a surprise appearance looking stunning as always to help present the best picture award with Jack Nicolson. The woman is simply gorgeous!

These were my personal highlights of the evening.  Have yourselves a Beautiful, Fabulous and Amazing Monday… See you on the other side, and remember to…

Love yourself again

The 84th Sparkle Show…

In Daily Musings on February 27, 2012 at 11:40 am

Here are my favourites from last night’s awards…. Enjoy!

Octavia Spencer Winner for "Best supporting actress" wearing Tadashi Shoji

Viola Davis "Best Actress Nominee" in Vera Wang - The red hair and green dress was just gorgeous on her!

This was the dress that did it for me!! Gwyneth Paltrow in Mr. Tom Ford

Ms. Esperanza Spalding's beautiful voice singing "What A Wonderful World" was truly breathtaking. Very talented young lady. The dress she wore on stage was so much nicer, still trying to find pic. Will post if I find it.

UPDATE! - Cannot find full length version of this, but it was a truly beautiful dress. Loving her statement ring!

This is my man right here! I don't know who he was wearing, but he was working it. - FYI: He helped score the telecast

Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli Couture - This pic does not really do the dress justice, but in my opinion, it was simply stunning

Roony Mara in Givenchy

Sandra's Marchesa dress hit the worst dress list, people on Twitter were evil. I loved this dress. When she walked on stage and you saw the scooped back, I thought it was gorgeous. Not every gown has to show breasts and thighs to be considered Oscar worthy.
