Poetry In Motion…

Poetry In Motion ~ Copyright Maylana's Closet

Recently, I found this fantastic little app called “Poetry Magnets”,  I used to own the actual magnets when I  lived in NY, but somehow they got lost in my move to DC.  I had hundreds of them spread all over my fridge, and I would create little ditties whenever my creative spirit moved me.

I was so happy to find these, they got me thinking about writing my poetry again.  Writing poetry has been a passion of mine for many years now, which unfortunately had to be put on the back burner.  Here are two couplets I’m sharing with you.  Now that I have a creative outlet via my blog; look out for more of my work.  I’ve actually written a small book of poetry, which has been ready for years; which I now plan to self publish.  I hope to accomplish that major milestone very soon.

A Bank Holiday & Iced Coffee

Boozy Iced Coffee- Averie Cooks

Hi Darlings! I hope you’re enjoying the bank holiday, both here and in the UK.  Although I’ve had an extremely busy week, I’m enjoying a marvelously long weekend; by getting lots of errands and projects done. While cruising Pinterest, I came across this lovely {and easy} Creamy Boozy Iced Coffee recipe, by one of my favourite foodie bloggers Averie Sunshine; who runs the blog Averie Cooks.  What I love about this particular iced coffee is that it contains Frangelico, which is a liqueur made with toasted hazelnuts, brown sugar, cinnamon, cocoa and vanilla extract.  Averie takes some of the most fantastic food photography, trust me you’ll come away drooling.

I’m looking for some new drink recipes to try out this summer, and this will certainly be one of them.  I’ll post them as I find them, so that you can try them too.  Click the link or the image to be taken to the full recipe, I’m sure you’ll feel it’s worth it.

Wishing you a fabulously short week.

Beautiful Peonies 2

Wow! This day has been extremely busy, hence why I’m only just writing this quick blog post after 9:00 p.m.  I hope you had a fantastic weekend, I certainly did, even if the weather, once again did not cooperate, but we’ve come to expect it now.  Above are the beautiful Peonies I purchase at Whole Foods on Friday.  It’s important ladies, that you treat yourself to flowers, don’t wait for someone else to buy them for you, go out and treat yourself; you deserve them every week!

The above photo was taken with my Canon T3i, which I’ve been practicing with.  The shot I’m most proud of is the one below.

Peonie Close Up Premiere

This is going to be an extremely busy week for me, so my posts may be a little sparse, but I promise to keep in touch, with short bursts of fabulous interest.

Have yourselves a Beautiful week

Above is a photograph, I took yesterday of some beautiful flowers blooming in my neighbourhood.  They just appeared from nowhere.  I think they got some major encouragement from the lovely weather, and wanted to show off their pink glory.  I would love for you to right-click on the photo, and save it, whereby, you can turn it into wall paper for your iPad or computer {it looks stunning on my iPad}.  Just a little Friday treat from me to you.

A Floetic Night With The Floacist…

In Daily Musings on May 15, 2013 at 1:24 pm

Today I introduce my very first guest writer on Maylana’s Closet.  I am proud to introduce Ms Althea Anderson, who is a prolific writer in her own right.  Ms Anderson hails from East London in England, and is one of the original Sylista’s who ever entered my life, because she is also my big sister.  Below in her own words, Althea describes in beautiful detail, her night at the Jazz Cafè while, attending the performance of The Floacist.

Blog Family, please welcome Ms. Anderson to the blogging stage.

Natalie Stewart ~ Floacist

I have heard it said, that there are angels who walk the earth in the form of man.  The gift they possess, enlightens us on a daily basis; ensuring that we constantly look for the good within, they help us to remember our true purpose on this earth, which is to “Know Thyself” and be all we are supposed to be.  One such angel is called Floacist.

On Sunday 28th April, my sweetheart and I had the pleasure of attending the only concert in London, her first on home soil in 7 years, I might add! For now I will leave you with just one word PHENOMINAL!

Who is she?  A quick induction for you: Originating from South London, singer, songwriter, and poet Natalie Stewart, the original member and founder of the group Floetry, invited her friend Marsha Ambrosius on stage to perform with her.  The combination of poetry and singing was an immediate success, and with that Floetry was born.

A hop skip and jump to the U.S., and two successful albums were released.  “Floetic”  in 2002 and “Flo’Ology” in 2005, both with memorable tracks “Say Yes” and “Supa Star” being the chart toppers. With the parting of ways in 2006, Stewart formed a production company producing successful plays, and threw in some acting of her own.  Metamorphosing into Floacist, with two beautiful albums; “Floetic Soul” in 2010, and “The Floacist Presents – Floetry Re-Birthin 2012. We now fast forward to the Jazz Café in London.

Ladies in heels; guys with beautiful locs, and cameras poised in anticipation; the atmosphere was electric as I gazed around.  Being a scribe myself (I love that description), I was anxious to witness a true priestess in full flow.  A roaring introduction, synchronized with 3 backing singers, bongos, piano and guitar bring her to the stage.  Opening with ‘Children of the Sun’ everyone connects, the journey begins…  “Slow Down” eases us along our way, as we absorb the words of wisdom, and melody…  Everyone starts swaying “doodaadoodaaadaaada…” Speechless!  Fantastic!  Time travelled and 9.15 p.m. turned into 11.00 p.m. Encore!

Floacist’s gift of rhetoric is breath-taking, poetry was created in its purest form, from the soul, blessings were had…  Consider me blessed!

No Great Gatsby For Me…

In Daily Musings on May 13, 2013 at 10:08 am

Happy Monday Darlings! I hope you had a great weekend.  Unfortunately on Saturday, I came down with a serious head cold, which I hope is not the flu {it’s getting worse as I write this on Sunday} therefore, my outing to the movies to see “The Great Gatsby” and give you my thoughts about it, has been put on hold until next weekend.

In the meantime, here are some absolutely gorgeous images of Carey Mulligan, who plays Daisy Buchanan in the movie.  The Australian costume designer, Catherine Martin who is a two-time Oscar winner, dressed her well!

Such A Darling Shoe, And Other Musings…

In Daily Musings on May 10, 2013 at 6:57 pm

Darling Shoe by Jeffrey Campbell

I’m in love with the “Darling Pump” by Jeffrey Campbell.  There’s nothing like a simple high-heeled pointy toe stiletto in a fabulous pop of mint.

Spring 2013

It’s Friday, the weekend is here, right now it’s 78 degrees, so with the sun shining brightly, I wore my own pops of colour.  If you love the bangles, they are available in the blog shop; more beautiful colours to be posted this weekend.

I’m planning to see “The Great Gatsby” this weekend, I’ll give you my take on what appears to be a very extravagant and fabulous movie, directed by Baz Luhrmann. Although I haven’t seen it yet, I have a slight issue, that Mr. Luhrmann decided to use modern-day music, i.e. Rap, and Pop as the musical score for a film taking place in the art deco, flapper era {after all it was executive produced by Jay Z}; but then again Baz has always thought outside the box with his movies.

I’ll refrain from judgment until I’ve actually seen it; it’ll be interesting to see how it all goes together…  Stay tuned!

Have yourselves a beautiful and fabulous weekend.

Will Spring Ever Get Here?

In Daily Musings on May 8, 2013 at 10:39 am

Summer White

Well Darlings, Spring  has left us once again; it has been a rainy and dreary 3 days here in Washington, DC, the sun has once again disappeared.  Apparently this is the 2nd coldest Spring on record, and right now this spring is heading towards being the coldest.  It was slighter warmer this time in 1975! It makes me wonder what this summer is going to be like… Will there be one?

The above image was found on Pinterest; I thought she looked so elegant, with her white dress and nude shoes… very summer.  I also think the perforated snake-skin Piccadilly wedge by Belstaff {love the wood panel} below, would also be gorgeous with this dress.  Hopefully we’ll all be wearing our spring/summer niceties very soon; if this weather ever changes!

Happy Wednesday, Have yourselves a beautiful day!
