Well it’s nearly time to wind my way back to my residence in the U.S.  Being back home in London has been fantastic! My sister and I have our new business in place and ready to be launched; look out for the upcoming blog post on our new venture, watch out for the beautiful items this new venture is going to bring, plus, I’ll be sharing lovely pics of my time here.

The weather did not cooperate, snow my second day, freezing rain and wind (what can you really expect in January!) but home is home, no matter what the weather brings.  The last couple of days haven’t been bad,the sun even came out for a couple of days (it did come out on my birthday, which was all I cared about!), but I’ve heard it’s been snowing in DC, so I’ve got that to look forward to. 🙂

London Calling…

London Trip

Hi Dahhlings!! It’s been over a week since I’ve posted.  Some of you may know, I travelled to my home town of London, England, to celebrate my birthday which was on Monday.  It was my intention to give you a blow-by-blow account of my time here, but boy was I wrong.  Once I landed, there was no time; my sister and I hit the ground running and we’re still going!

In the coming weeks I will be featuring gorgeous photos of my time back home, including posts of beautiful little stores I’ve discovered; there will also be an update with lovely photos of the Sika boutique, those who know me, know I love Sika dresses!  Also watch out for the beautiful photos that were taken at the Ritz, which is where my birthday luncheon was held.  My birthday lunch was an event I will remember for the rest of my life.  There was laughter, tears of joy and all around first class service from one of the premier landmark hotels in London. You’ve never dined until you’ve dined at the Ritz!

I’ll be back in the States soon!

Irving Penn, Photographer Extraordinaire…

In Daily Musings on January 11, 2013 at 2:54 pm

irving2.jpg Miles Davis

I’ve always loved the photography of Irving Penn. I love to admire the black and white sharpness of most of his work; the poses of his subjects against a white or grey background. Everything is sharp and angular.  For me, the one of Miles Davis above, captures it all;  the darkness of his skin against the whites of his nails, makes for such a strong and powerful image. Irving Penn was able to capture the heart and soul of this complicated and spirited musician.

You really cannot mistake a Irving Penn photograph for any other. He was one of the top photographers of his time.  Irving Penn photographed his first cover for Vogue magazine in 1943 and continued to work at the magazine throughout his career, shooting covers, portraits, still life, fashion, and photographic essays. Irving Penn passed away in 2009 at the age of 92.

Here is a small collection of some of my favourites.

Happy Wednesday Dahlings! I’m taking a short break from crocheting hats, my fingers are a little sore; I truly deserve this little rest {maybe it’s time for a cocktail!}. I’ll be back to business later on this evening or  tomorrow.  I hope you’re enjoying your Wednesday; we’re half way to the week being over, and I’m 6 days away from flying through the air to London.

My posts will be brief for the next few days, until my day of departure; after that you’ll be reading all the fabulous details of my trip, which will be titled “The London Diaries“{at least that’s the working title today :-)}. Stay tuned!

Crochet Away!

Toffee

Even with the excitement of my impending departure to London, I am crocheting my little heart out.  It seems my customers (new and old) have realized I’m going away for a little while, and I’m receiving orders for my crochet hats left and right!.  I’m always on the look out for unusual crochet hooks and found the ones below on a site called Simply Art. The hooks above are hand carved in India; I think they’re simply gorgeous! I’ll be ordering a set when I return.

I’ve completed quite a few orders today and I’m pooped!

New Year, Birthdays And Me…

In Daily Musings on January 5, 2013 at 11:02 am

BIRTHDAY

Hi Dahlings!!! I’M BAAACK!!! I had a lovely Christmas and New Years and lots of rest!! Although I will say my rest also consisted of crocheting hats, I have been so busy with orders and welcoming new customers to the Maylana’s Closet boutique. I hope you rang in the New Year fabulously, and on day five you’re still sticking to whatever New Years resolutions you may have made.  I did not make resolutions per se, but there are things I WILL accomplish this year. I am very much looking forward to 2013, This is going to be an amazing year!!

Today my blog turns 1-year-old!! I am so proud!  According to my WordPress stats, my blog welcomed nearly 80,000 visitors from nearly every corner of the earth last year; for me that’s a major accomplishment.  When I started this blog, I had no idea what was going to happen with it, I just knew it would be an avenue for me to express myself, show my creative side and connect with the world.  I’ve always wanted this blog to be a cross between Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, O ~Oprah and the New York Times style section rolled into one. I plan for it to be so much more.

This blog has always been for women in the know, who love beautiful things. I want to thank all of my followers and fellow bloggers from all over the world, for being active participants, posting comments, sharing advice and just giving everything a newbie blogger could ask for.

Lots happening this year.  Over the coming months, look out for more photos taken by me with my Canon T3i {which I’m still learning to use}, more style features, Maylana about town, informative articles, and so much more.  Very soon, for a couple of weeks, this blog will be all about my visit to my hometown, London, England.  I will be, blogging about my trip, where I’ll be celebrating a milestone birthday {Jan 21}.  I bet you can’t guess what milestone this is! :-).  Look out for lots of photos, new finds for the Maylana’s Closet boutique, and all the fun I plan to have while there.

So to start the celebrations, click here to sing along to Stevie Wonder’s Happy Birthday.

Wishing you all a Blessed, Fabulous, Amazing, and Prosperous 2013!!!

Cheers

Cheers!!
