300…

Maylana's Closet

Wow! This is my 300th post!  I can’t believe that I’ve actually written 300 articles in the 13 months since I started this blog.  I probably would have reached this number a lot sooner,  but there were times I was only writing once maybe twice per week due to a busy schedule, and all the other things life can throw at you sometimes, but nevertheless, I’m still here and loving it.  As a treat, here are 20 things you don’t know about me {unless you know me personally} in no particular order.

  1. I love dark chocolate drizzled popcorn
  2. I don’t like rhubarb {I remember rhubarb and custard at school… yuk!}
  3. I love the show Castle on ABC {reruns shown every day on TNT}
  4. I don’t like radishes {another yuk}
  5. I love Amazon.com {you can buy practically anything on there!}
  6. I watch King of the Hill, American Dad and Family Guy every night before bed {yeah I know!}
  7. I’m probably the only person who hasn’t read the entire book, Anna Karenina {I’ve tried… TWICE, I’m going to try again}
  8. I won’t drink or eat anything that is the colour blue {except for blueberries, which are naturally so}
  9. I love all types of pasta, but pasta doesn’t love me… Bloat and instant weight gain.
  10. I’m very good at procrastinating {who isn’t}
  11. I’ve read practically every James Patterson,  Alex Cross book (yeah I know, real serious literature}
  12. I’ve read all of the Shopaholic books by Sophie Kinsella {yep, more serious literature}
  13. I love the show Suits on USA ~ Isn’t Gabriel Macht who plays Harvey Specter simply gorgeous in those Tom Ford Suits!
  14. My favourites movies are Snatch, Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels, all the Ocean Eleven  movies and Breakfast At Tiffany’s (I love them all equally)
  15. I wear black nearly every day {remnant of working in the record and beauty industries} I do wear colour in the summer.
  16. I love Psych, on USA, though I’m not loving this season as much.
  17. I wear 4″ heels practically every day
  18. I say “Thank You” every day I wake up
  19. I love Ackee and Saltfish {salted cod fish}, with rice and peas, or basmati rice {Jamaican dish}
  20. I’m probably the only person in America who has not seen Scandal {except 10 mins of first episode} with Kerry Washington!

So there you go, 20 things of no real importance, but they make up fabulous me!

THANK YOU so much for following and reading my posts, it really means a lot to me, and THANK YOU for your lovely comments.  I’m looking forward to writing another 300 and beyond…  See you there!

I think I’ll treat myself to some chocolate drizzled popcorn!

Sports car

On the way to Frozen-Yo, I saw this beauty parked outside.  I’d love to take a spin, wearing a gorgeous Hermes scarf, worn exactly like the picture below; blowing elegantly in the breeze.  Simply the perfect car {and perfect colour} for this gorgeous weather we’re having.  Thank goodness, it’s a little cooler today at 85 degrees {we reached a whopping 91 yesterday}.

From The Archives ~ “My Fragrance For 2012”

In Daily Musings on April 11, 2013 at 12:17 pm

While going through past posts, I decided today would be archive day.  Here is a post which was originally published in March of 2012 {with minor formatting changes}.  When I look back on my past posts, I see how far I’ve come with my writing, and if I do say so, I’m quite proud of myself 🙂 Don’t you feel the same about your own writing?

 If I’m in the mood, I might post another from the archives…  So stay tuned!  Happy Thursday Darlings, we’re nearly there.

I’ve decided upon Bvlgari Mon Jasmine Noir.  This is truly a beautiful fragrance which is already a classic for me.  This is the lighter version to the much heavier and in my opinion pungent Jasmine Noir, which reminds me too much of Opium by Yves Saint Laurent {remember that one ladies?}.

I’ve been a fan of Bvlgari fragrances for some time, especially the Bvlgari Rose Essentielle.  Mon Jasmine Noir has top notes of golden citron and floral lily of the valley with of course the elegant Jasmine. Sprayed lightly (very important, you don’t want everyone in the elevator to pass out!) you can have yourself a daily “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” moment.  Treat yourself! Available at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Saks.

From Forty To Ninety…

weather

Degrees that is! Can you believe it’s 90 degrees in DC!! Just last week we were at 45, then we had that gorgeous weekend in the 60’s and now since Monday we’ve been in the 80’s. There’s been no time to prepare, you go to bed with the heat on and wake up and suddenly you need to turn on your ceiling fan or A/C. Does anyone believe in Global Warming?

Last week I became a Lucky Magazine contributor, {see badge at bottom of page} and I received this response from the team at Vince Camuto regarding the blog post I wrote a couple of weeks ago, on these gorgeous blue sandals.

I’d say it made my day!  If you’re interested in becoming a contributor, click here and it’ll take you to their community page. Good luck!

If you’d like to follow me on Twitter, click on the birdie and I’ll follow you back.  See you there!

In the meantime, I’m going to see if I should start pulling out my summer things, or is this a joint hoax between mother nature and that silly groundhog!

Vintage Impresario….

Vintage Coat

On Sunday, the most amazing afro caught my eye, and that’s how  I met the most unique and extraordinary woman by the name of Makkah, who is the owner of Revolution Vintage in Baltimore.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I was in Baltimore, and happened to stumble upon this charming little boutique.  While there, Makkah and I struck up a lovely conversation, whereby, I purchased what I thought was one of the most beautiful vintage coats.  Makkah offered me the most wonderful deal, once I told her I was a blogger, which I could not pass up, so wonderful in fact, I dare not tell you how much!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The best way to describe Makkah’s boutique, is it’s a delightful bazaar of unusual and eclectic finds; like a Magpies’ nest of colourful and shiny things, you don’t know what you should look at first.  A hodge podge mix of vintage dresses, coats and scarves hung on coat racks and laid across old fashion sofas, fabulous accessories spilled on a dresser for good measure.  As you can see, Makkah herself is a stunning vision of colours, and creativity, exuding the most artistic of auras.  I found her when the market was nearly closing, because I’m sure I could have spent half the day with her if I had found her earlier.

You can find the lovely Makkah on Instagram @revolutionvintage, where she has some of the most amazing photos, or if you’re in the area, visit her boutique at the Patapsco Indoor Flea Market in Baltimore.  It’s so worth it!

Cherry Blossoms And All…

In Daily Musings on April 8, 2013 at 11:58 am

Cherry Blossoms

Happy Monday! I had another fantastic weekend, the weather was absolutely gorgeous!!! 60 degrees on Saturday and a whopping 67 yesterday.  Apparently we’re heading for 70 degrees today, lets enjoy it while we can.  While I was out, I made a spontaneous decision to drive down to the Tidal Basin in downtown DC… Wow!  The traffic was at a major standstill, so all I could get was this drive by photo of a few cherry trees.  Side note: Metro really is the only way to visit the Cherry Blossoms!

Most of the trees were not in full bloom, but the crowd was definitely there.  I’m  hoping to return next weekend with my Canon T3i, when they should be fully bloomed in all their pink and white glory.

Stay tuned for my upcoming blog post {maybe later today or tomorrow} on my trip to Baltimore, where I met the most wonderful and eccentric vintage store owner.  You’ll see why she truly deserves her own post!

I hope you’re having a Fabulous and Amazing Monday!

And remember…

Maylana's Closet

Yesterday, I posted a couple of pieces, I found at my favourite vintage store; I forgot to post this gorgeous black slip and peach coloured ballerina style nightgown, that I thought you’d love to see.  I’m going to try the peach gown with a knee-length tank dress, belt it and maybe an additional vintage petticoat underneath to see how that works.  I’ll let you know 🙂

A young lady I met, while shopping, picked up these beauties for $5!!

It’s another gorgeous day, a little chilly, but I’ll take it, because the sun is shining very brightly!

Wearing a vintage beaded scarf I picked up for $4!!
Also wearing earrings from the Maylana’s Closet “Touch of India Collection” coming soon.

Hello fabulous people.  This morning truly looked like spring had finally sprung! After a gorgeous Saturday, a grey and dreary Sunday, today truly is starting out to be absolutely gorgeous.  Can we finally exhale our collective breaths that spring has arrived?

french connection dress dual

 I had a terrific weekend, I went scouting for vintage finds, at one of my favourite spots in Maryland, and came across a few goodies.  I found this gorgeous brand new sequined French Connection dress, with tags, which retailed last season for $248, selling for under $100,!!!  Alas, it was not in the Maylana’s Closet budget!

Liz Claibourne

I also found this gorgeous Liz Claiborne ankle length coat dress for under $5!!  I have not been a fan of Liz Claiborne for a number of years now, but this dress was too fantastic to resist.  I’m going to wear this unbuttoned up to the thigh with shorts underneath, cinched at the waist with ankle strap flats or high heels depending on my mood, and then paired with a colourful clutch. Very 50’s.

Those of you who follow my blog, know I love Instagram {as well as Pinterest!}; here are some of my weekend images. If you’d like to follow me on IG, you can find me @Maylana.

I hope your Easter weekend, was as blessed, fabulous and productive as mine.  Wishing you a Glorious Monday and a Fantastic and Amazing week.
