I just discovered this gorgeous Liberty Track Spike trainer (sneaker) via AnOther, which is one of my favourite online magazines.  I love this online publication for its funky vibe, great articles and gorgeous photos.

The collaboration between Nike and Liberty’s of London has produced some unusual and funky combinations. See full article at AnOther here.  I wish they’d also make it as a sneaker, I’d be first in line for this one.  On sale exclusively at Liberty’s Of London £150 {approx. $234)

Liberty’s is one of my favourites stores to visit when I go home to London; to see more of what they have to offer, visit them here: http://www.liberty.co.uk/

Boosh…

In Daily Musings, New Loves! on July 10, 2012 at 9:51 am

Update 7.10.12 ~ sweetofstyle  just informed me that she saw the Illamasqua range in Sephora here in the U.S., I’ve just checked and she is absolutely right.  For those of us living in the States, we are also able to get our  Illamasqua Boosh (or other fabulous colour) fix.  Visit a Sephora store or order online. http://www.sephora.com/nail-varnish-P241720

Yesterday, I discovered the most amazing nail polish by a company based in London called Illamasqua.  The colour that drew my attention was this gorgeous glossy black called Boosh {don’t you just love that name?}.  I love black nail polish.  If you want to make a statement, a beautiful high shine black manicure {and/or pedicure} always does the trick.

Go to Illamasqua’s website, the colours available are simply stunning, and come in a spectrum of bold shades with a range of finishes.  Although sold in the UK, there is free shipping to the U.S. with orders over £75  (approx. $116).  My sister is using a colour called Rampage, which is a dark khaki green… Simply Gorgeous! There’s also a huge make-up range which is very popular with my fellow UK  divas.

See more colours here: http://www.illamasqua.com/shop/products/nails/nail-varnishes/boosh-nail-varnish

Happy polishing!

What Did You Do…

In Daily Musings on June 11, 2012 at 11:13 am

This weekend?  Did you make the most of the last two days?  Did you accomplish everything you set out to do?  I hope you did.  Are you energized and ready to take on the new week?  You better be, because it’s here!!! I had a great weekend.  I spent a lot of time sourcing inventory for my new Etsy boutique www.etsy.com/shop/maylanascloset   The downfall of shopping for inventory; is every gorgeous piece I find, I want to keep it for myself!

As I was writing this blog post, I received an email that I had just sold the Diane von Furstenberg dress I had listed on Etsy! My first Etsy sale!!! I wanted to pass out, I could barely concentrate on finishing this post… Wow what a feeling!

Searching for good quality vintage is a full-time job in itself.  You come across a lot of rubbish, but amongst all the garbage there are some true treasures to be found, and boy did I find them, especially on Sunday.  I love what I do, and my clients love what I do, so it makes it all worth while.  I plan to bring fantastic pieces to you on a regular basis.  In the next few months, watch out for beautiful items, that will be arriving  from Portobello Road market in London, courtesy of my sister, who is the ultimate style trendsetter in her own right.  Keep watching this blog, I’ll let you know each time I upload something new.

I love the rollers!

We’re at the start of a new week, let’s make it superb, with some fabulous and marvelous thrown in for good measure.

Peonies I bought yesterday. Did you treat yourself to some flowers? If not treat yourself today!!

Have a blessed week Dahhlings!

This is who I want to be when I grow up to be 64 years old!!  My sister called me from London and alerted me to Grace Jones‘ Slave To the Rhythm performance at Buckingham Place for Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee… Wow!!  There is no one more fabulous than Ms. Jones.  Grace appears on stage with a hula hoop by her side, then proceeds to hula hoop through the entire song! She Hula Hoops!!!! Check out Grace’s legs!!!

Grace makes me proud to be a British Born Jamaican!! As my sister says “She is a bad gyal” (in Jamaican dialect).  At 64 Grace is still the rocking Glamazon she’s always been.

Big up Ms. Jones! Yes we love the rhythm!

Enjoy the video!

A Brit Gal’s Friday…

In Daily Musings on June 1, 2012 at 9:51 am

I’m proud to be British!!

Well we’ve survived the short week, and it was a hectic and productive one for me; I hope it was a good week for you too.  My family in England will be having their own 4 day weekend due to celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, Monday and Tuesday.

Queen Elizabeth has been on the throne for 60 years!!! Poor Prince Charles might not be sitting on the throne anytime soon.  Ms. Queen does not seem to be going anywhere. I remember the celebrations for the Silver Jubilee 25 years ago; I hadn’t yet moved to the U.S.  I know there’ll be lots of partying and waving the good old Union Jack.  Have a drink for me fam… Cheers!

See Bex Rox…

In Daily Musings, New Loves! on May 9, 2012 at 9:42 am

While perusing a newly discovered, shopping site, Obaz www.obaz.com, I came across this stunning bracelet which is called the Elvissa cuff, and loved it so much, I decided to do more research.  It was a pleasant surprise to find out that it’s created by a British company named Bex Rox, with a showroom and studio based in Nottinghill in London (my neck of the woods).

The designer Bex Manners was born and raised on Spain’s Balearic Islands.  Her company Bex Rox was launched in 2006 and the rise has been amazing to say the least.  I can see why!  When you visit her website, you are confronted with the most beautiful and unusual pieces of jewelry.  This is not your everyday run of the mill trinkets; these are statement pieces large and small with a lot to say.  I’m sure they will be conversation starters if you were ever to own one.

I wish I could post all of the pieces, because they truly are beautiful, but take a visit to her site www.bexrox.com; I’m sure you’ll find something there.  A couple of my favourite pieces are the featured bracelet above and the kissing seahorses. There are also a number of variations of the same bracelet.  Bex Rox prices range from $100 and up.

What is obaz?   Well obaz which is short for online bazaar, lets anyone create their own group of like-minded buyers looking to get a good price on the same product.  A  minimum of 25 people have to be in a group to haggle for a product.  oBaz hagglers will then reach out to merchants or manufacturers and leverage the group and their own negotiating expertise to get the best possible deal.  This could be a win win situation, as you’re able to purchase products under the going retail price.

The Soul Of London…

In Daily Musings on March 29, 2012 at 3:09 pm

Another extremely busy day today, so here is another short and  sweet post.

To help my busy days go by, I’m always tuned in to The Sound of London Radio (TSOL).  This is my all time favourite music radio station, which is streamed live online. TSOL plays all the old school jams of yester year which I raved and listened to back home in London. I don’t feel so homesick while listening to them.

TSOL plays Lovers Rock (mostly Brits will understand what lover’s rock is; click the link to find out more), old school reggae, soul from the  60’s,80’s up to the present. TSOL plays music which just never gets aired on regular radio.  For me it brings London right into my office/living room/bedroom, wherever I happen to be.

Most of the DJ’s, I either went to school with or lived in my neighborhood. It’s good to see they’ve taken their love of music to the next level.  If you want to hear something different instead of the same five songs you hear every day tune in to TSOL.  You’ll realize the programming for British radio is very different then it is in the states.  You can also listen to them on any Apple or Android product.

Check them out, I think you’ll love them too.  Say hello to everyone in the shoutbox.

Also check them out on Facebook.

Happy listening: http://thesouloflondonradio.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=28&Itemid=58

The Ultimate Black Leggings…

In New Loves! on February 8, 2012 at 11:24 am

Are by Sassybax!  Black leggings are a staple of every fashionista’s wardrobe.  This simple item can be dressed up or down. Start with a pair of good quality leggings, which have the right texture and thickness, there is nothing worse than a pair in cheap thin material.  With your leggings you can start with a turtle neck, V-neck or crew neck and then throw on any combination of items over it.  Try a wrap dress, an oversized sweater, a tuxedo jacket, a shift dress, a mini, your options are endless. It’s all about layering.  In the spring swap out the sweaters for tank tops or camisoles and then add a cute light weight dress with a cardi or jacket.  Try different pieces until you get your look, and always wear the right boots/shoes!  An ankle boot or knee/over the knee boot is preferable, (especially in fall/winter) if you have to wear a shoe, wear a high-heeled Mary Jane or closed toe pump. Wearing sandals can get tricky, because  if you don’t do it right, it can make you look like a “working girl”, you’ve got to know what you’re doing here ladies.  The important thing is to find a look that works for your shape and size and is completely flattering to you.  The ultimate dress up, is to throw on a fur coat/jacket, some high-heeled over the knee boots, a piece of statement jewelry and your most adored handbag and your good to go!  This combination is a shout out to the most stylish woman I know who is very special to me back home in London.

While on my own continuous quest for the perfect leggings, I came across the Sassybax range.  These leggings are something else. They are of high quality fabric and the most important thing is they give you a little lift and tuck where necessary (always a good thing!), giving you a smooth overall  appearance.  There are two versions, the bottom lifting  and the cigarette pant.  Follow this link and take a look  for yourself. http://www.joyus.com/shop/category/apparel/catalog/1-50816/sassybax-cigarette-pants?vp=169

Small Island…

In Daily Musings on February 7, 2012 at 10:55 am

Last night I watched the first installment of the most amazing mini-series on PBS. The series is called “Small Island“, It’s about the migration of Jamaicans to England in the 1950’s when Jamaica was still a colony of England.  This is obviously the second showing of this series, I have no idea how I missed it the first time around 2 years ago!

This series really touched me in a personal way, because as a first generation, “British born Jamaican” it gave me an idea of why my parents moved to Britain and what they found when they got there.  It was not Buckingham Palace and tea for them!  Even though my mother, told me stories of what it was like, to actually see a vision of it on-screen, it gave me more clarity. These characters could have been my parents.  In one scene, the main character Hortense, asks if there is electricity in every room and when she is told yes, she gets really excited.  Hortense longs for a fulling life and a doorbell after being born and raised in a broken and impoverished home.  Hortense is a school teacher and has it in her head that when she gets to London she will be  teaching rich girls and having tea with the Queen (yes she really does!).  There is never ever doubt in Hortense’s mind that she will get to England, it’s just a matter of how.  Hortense, does what she has to, to get to London (that scene had me falling out laughing, she got a box in her mouth, for her efforts, Jamaican’s understand what I mean!).

Great scene!

There is a quote from Hortense “This island is too small if you have big dreams… without dreams you are nothing” .  This was the mindset of most people on the island, and the reason why they wanted to move away, thinking there was a better life in England. There was, but they worked long and hard and took a lot of abuse for it.  Nothing was handed to them… Nothing!

It was mind-boggling for me to watch the scene where Jamaicans were waving the Union Jack in Jamaica (as that was their flag at the time), all British colonies flew the Union Jack.  Jamaica gained their independence in 1962, the same year my mother left to join my father in London, England.

Before Jamaicans arrived in England, they really thought that because they were under British rule, and therefore “British subjects” they would be treated the same as the Brits once they arrived on those cold, damp, chilly shores.  This was not the case! What they did not realize was the British only wanted them there as cheap labour, to help rebuild after being bombed to dust by Germany.  The Brits really thought the Jamaicans (and other West Indians) were going to come over on a long hard voyage by ship, work themselves to death and then return to Jamaica… Boy were they mistaken! For us British born Jamaicans, this series will certainly touch us deep inside, because our parents lived it.

I don’t want to give too much away about the series as there is a second installment next Monday.  This post will continue.  Last night ended very interestingly, the drama is about to be ramped up. Stay tuned.

If you haven’t seen it, it’s is a must see, and if you have, take the time to watch it again.  In the meantime visit http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/smallisland/index.html where you can find more information.  This series was adapted from the book of the same name by Andrea Levy.
