The Georgetown Experience…

In Daily Musings on April 16, 2012 at 11:27 am

I wanted this dress, but of course, they were sold out and would not remove this one from the window, which was my size...

Happy Monday dahhlings, I hope you had a beautiful and fabulous weekend.

After a really crazy day on Saturday, I decided to be spontaneous and venture down to Georgetown in Washington, DC, with its chic stores and cobbled streets (side bar – never ever go into Georgetown in clog heeled sandals).  Going into Georgetown is always a harrowing experience, hence why I hardly go down there.  Georgetown was fun and a mistake at the same time.  It was great because I got to visit some of my favourite stores,  Anthropologie, Zara, Cusp and Hu’s Shoes among others, and do a little shopping; now here’s the downside; Georgetown’s crowded cobbled streets are not meant for heels of any kind, it is strictly a flat shoe kind of town.

Those same cobbled streets will cause your feet to start screaming and you’ll also be spending most of your time conducting a high wire balancing act on those cobble stones.  On top of all of that, there were what appeared to be thousands of people, most of them college kids on spring break, and then there was the awful traffic with drivers trying their absolute best to run you over.  If you’re going into Georgetown to shop, you’ve got to go early and be out of there by noon (remember this was a spontaneous decision on my part).  You’ll also find that Georgetown is like a black hole, it’s a hassle getting down there (no metro and driving is a nightmare, your only sane option is busing it, the Circulator is best); and definitely hard to get out of (can I get a bloody taxi please!!!).

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend, I certainly did, minus the trek to Georgetown.  The weather was absolutely gorgeous, there was no need to stay in.  It appears we’re going to have this weather until at least Wednesday.  We’ll see what mother nature decides to throw our way after that.

Wishing you a fabulous and glorious week!

Wear Do You Sika??

In Daily Musings on March 30, 2012 at 10:30 am

#dress #sikadress #african fashion #AfricanFashions #Sika Dress

For my birthday a couple of years ago, my sister Althea, bought me the most gorgeous 1950’s style dress, with an African twist.  Designed by a wonderful designer named Phyllis Taylor in London, who is the owner of a beautiful little shop named Sika Designs in South London.  I have been hooked on Sika dresses ever since, I wish she had a store here (sigh).  Ms. Taylor  who is of Ghanaian heritage creates her designs in London, which are then beautifully constructed with couture worthy stitching in Ghana; using original African fabric.

The Daisy Dress – From the new Labyrinth Collection

Sika dresses are statement pieces onto themselves, with their full skirts and layered petticoats (purchased separately) worn underneath.  A wide sash belt tied into a bow is the finishing touch on most dresses, you can’t help but be noticed.  For me Sika dresses are  “Mad Men” comes to Africa!

While wearing a Sika dress, you look and feel like an exotic, beautifully wrapped gift.  My sister has purchased other items for me from the Sika collection which I love equally; and now that the weather is about to break, look out for that bright spark of African fabric  in sky-high heels walking down the street; that will be me. Say hello if you see me 🙂

I would post a pic of me in my dress, but the quality of the photo once uploaded was blurry and not blog worthy.  I’ll take another pic soon.

Simply Stunning!!!

A New Dawn, A New Day…

In Daily Musings on March 19, 2012 at 9:39 am

Yeah, it's Monday!!

Before I begin,  I want to give a big London shout out to my mum, sister and mum Joyce, and the other UK mums I know, for having a fabulous UK Mother’s Day  yesterday, Love ya!

Well it’s Monday again.  I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend like I did.  I spent yesterday in DuPont Circle having brunch at FrontPage which was just OK to begin with, then I found out later that they charged my credit card 3 times, so on top of the so so brunch and weak mimosa, I’m now out an extra $100!!!!!   They’re supposed to correct the situation today so we’ll see.  Do I need to make a phone call to my contact at the  Washington Post???   There has been an issue of credit card fraud at restaurants.  I would be the wrong person to go down that road with.  I did not discover this until my dining partner called me later on to alert me after checking her own card.   FrontPage received an extra $200 between the 2 of us.   Anyway…  I digress.  After a cloudy and chilly start, yesterday turned out to be a really gorgeous day.  My friend and I popped into a few really cute stores.  I will feature items and/or stores in upcoming posts this week.

Here’s a sign which tickled me as we were walking along…

Take Heed!!

I bought my Tom Ford lipstick on Friday.  I’ve never spent $48 on a lipstick , but I am well worth it!  With the embossed TF it makes me not even want to use it.  Maybe I’ll put it on display in my china cabinet with my collection of teapots.  This will be the only thing I can afford from Mr. Ford, therefore, I’ll make it last!!

Wishing you all a fabulous, glorious and blessed week!

And remember ladies…

See you later Dahhlings!!

Really Seeing Blue…

In Daily Musings on March 6, 2012 at 12:39 pm

A pop of colour.

It took me over four hours to complete this post today, due to computer glitches and all sorts of other gremlins, so the title of my post is very appropriate.  I need a cocktail now.  Here you go…

There are some really gorgeous blues out there right now, from neon, to turquoise, to teal, to azure; there’s a whole Crayola box of blues out there.  I will  be incorporating some form of vivid blue into my own spring/summer wardrobe, you should give one or more of these blues a try too.  Get some colour in your life.

Burberry Leather Trench - I love this entire look. The little red bag just seals it!

If you’re not quite ready to take the leap and commit to a blue polish on your fingernails, how about applying it to your pedicure?  This blue would look stunning peeking out of a pair of high-heeled strappy sandals.

Kanye’s Kicks…

In Daily Musings, Maylana's Dream List, New Loves! on March 5, 2012 at 10:46 am

Yes ladies, Kanye West has teamed up with Giuseppe Zanotti, to create these beyond gorgeous shoes. Covered in an extravagant array of embroidered pearls, with calf velvet leather, they truly are the ultimate luxury.  These beauties will be part of his DONDA Line, his new design venture named after his late mother. The little darlings are selling exclusively through French retailer Colette for $5,800… Yes I said $5,800!!! I’ll take 2 pairs after I go to the bank to take out a mortgage.  I’m sure my bank manager will approve.  A girl can dream can’t she?

They should be entered into the Diva Shoe Hall of Fame and will definitely go onto the Maylana’s Dream List.

Clutch To Me…

In New Loves! on March 2, 2012 at 11:30 am

Browsing through my favourite shopping site, Etsy, I  came across this darling little shop by the name of Quistt. Quistt sells a wonderful array of adorable clutch bags and small accessories.  The owner, Patricia Quist -Therson, a native of Ghana studied Architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.   However, her passion for fashion, moved her to design her own line of accessories.  You can see her African influence and architectural training shining through her designs.  I’m loving her wooden handled striped clutch which is in line with the bold print themes floating around this year.

Wooden Handled Clutch - $50.00

Red Clutch - $40.00

Visit Patricia’s Etsy shop @ http://www.etsy.com/shop/Quistt?ref=seller_info I think you’ll love what you see.

As a small business owner myself, I am all about supporting and promoting women-owned businesses.  Ladies, let’s get out there and support each other, we have no problem buying from our favourite high-end fashion stores; and there is nothing wrong with that, but take a look at what your small independently owned boutique has to offer, you’d be amazed at the quality workmanship you’ll find there.  Every Saturday is “Small Business Saturday” where you should go out and buy at least 1 item  from an independently owned business.  We need you.

Happy Friday Dahhlings!
