Academy Award, Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, Hattie McDaniel, Howard University, Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, Washington DC

On February 29 1940, Hattie McDaniel became the first black woman to win an Academy Award. Hattie won for “Best Supporting Actress”. At the awards that year, Hattie and her escort were seated at a segregated table for two, away from her cast mates. This was a reminder of yet how far the industry and country had to go regarding racism. Hattie faced a lot of criticism from the black community for playing the mammy roles and this is why I love this quote from her: “I’d rather play a maid, then be one.” Hattie was a proud women and stood by her choices. With all the drama surrounding “The Help” maybe we need to remember that.
There is also some controversy as to what actually happened to Hattie’s Oscar, no one seems to be able to find it. There is speculation that it went missing during the civil riots of the 1960’s. Rumour has it, that her Oscar was thrown into the Potomac River in Washington, DC . Howard University whom the Oscar was willed to, say they have no record of having received it. What really happened to Hattie McDaniel’s Oscar? It still has not been found. No matter what caused its disappearance, she was still the first and acknowledged for it. Hattie passed away of breast cancer in 1952.
Thank you Hattie for being the first and creating a path for many others.

I don’t think I will ever stop wearing wedges, the higher the better. The wedge seems to have been around since time began, there has always been some variation of it throughout the ages. Also, wedges provide the perfect balance and are much more comfortable to walk around in instead of a pair of stilettos. Though I do love my stilettos they just don’t work for me for every day wear as often, my feet can’t take it after 20+ years of wearing 4″ heels. 😉
I just found Jeffrey Campbell’s Rockette Wedge in this gorgeous shade of blue suede at Urban Outfitters. Jeffrey Campbell seems to be the “It” go to guy for gorgeous, well-made and unusual shoes under $200.

Available at Urban Outfitters and other stores – $175.00

From fellow blogger “the Lookbook Philosophy” These truly are a work of art, but like she mentioned they do look painful. Enjoy!

I love the art of this shoe! Unfortunately, the longer I look at it, the more I think I can see the model’s foot swelling up and turning red! This looks quite painful and uncomfortable, but how beautiful is the wood pattern and the shape? Even the contrast of the wood and the satin ribbon is intriguing to me. Sadly, I would have to pass on the possibility of obtaining splinters with each step. Never mind the fact that a slightly uncoordinated person, such as myself, is just asking for a very public trip . . . wobble . . . wobble . . . steady . . . steady . . . wait! . . . Oh Noooooooo! . . . slow-mo drop with an accompanying awkward roll type of catastrophe.
I think I’d rather just keep them on display on my living room shelf, secretly deeming myself a…

84th Academy Awards, Dress, Givenchy, Gwyneth Paltrow, Octavia Spencer, Oscar, Tom Ford, Twitter, Vera Wang, Viola Davis

Here are my favourites from last night’s awards…. Enjoy!

Octavia Spencer Winner for "Best supporting actress" wearing Tadashi Shoji

Viola Davis "Best Actress Nominee" in Vera Wang - The red hair and green dress was just gorgeous on her!

This was the dress that did it for me!! Gwyneth Paltrow in Mr. Tom Ford

Ms. Esperanza Spalding's beautiful voice singing "What A Wonderful World" was truly breathtaking. Very talented young lady. The dress she wore on stage was so much nicer, still trying to find pic. Will post if I find it.

UPDATE! - Cannot find full length version of this, but it was a truly beautiful dress. Loving her statement ring!

This is my man right here! I don't know who he was wearing, but he was working it. - FYI: He helped score the telecast

Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli Couture - This pic does not really do the dress justice, but in my opinion, it was simply stunning

Roony Mara in Givenchy

Sandra's Marchesa dress hit the worst dress list, people on Twitter were evil. I loved this dress. When she walked on stage and you saw the scooped back, I thought it was gorgeous. Not every gown has to show breasts and thighs to be considered Oscar worthy.

Those of you who know me, know that I am a huge Mad Men fan (See my January 17 post); therefore, you already know I watch it mostly for the clothes. Dressing was an art back then, where women looked truly feminine. I’ve just received a flyer from Banana Republic who have jumped on the Mad Men wagon and designed a line around the show. This is their second “Mad Men” collection. My favourite is the “Joan dress“, which is the cream and bold floral print dresses seen below, I’ve ordered the print. Remember ladies its bold prints for 2012. For those of you who watch the show; you know Joan is a true bombshell, probably a US 10/12 with her red hair and Jessica Rabbit curves to match. The Joan Holloway character with her sultry style can truly wear a wiggle dress, she’s a woman who would still turn heads today.
The new season starts March 25, on AMC.

The perfect shoe for this dress is:
