A Bentley Passion…

In Daily Musings, Maylana's Dream List on June 29, 2012 at 11:40 am

As promised, today is my first Objects of Desire posting.  Objects of Desire is anything I would love to have if money were no object.  Objects of Desire will be featured on the last Friday of every month.  Objects could be anything my little heart desires.  It’s my ultimate wish list.  To start things off, my first feature is this 2012 passion pink Bentley Continental GT Coupe, whose sale proceeds, will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

This beauty would be my way to ride around South Beach/Biscayne Bay, Miami (one of my all time favourite places) in true Maylana style, while supporting a very worthy cause at the same time.

Stay tuned to see what I come up with for next’s months Object’s of Desire

The temperatures for the next 8 days will be a soaring 100 degrees in Washington, DC!!  Stay Cool, Stay Chic, Stay Hydrated!!

Whether you’re poor, middle class, rich, black, white or green, The HIV infection is an equal opportunity disease. WRAP UP ~ TAKE THE TEST~ TAKE CONTROL! What’s your excuse?

Goodbye Folk Bespoke…

In Daily Musings, New Loves! on June 26, 2012 at 10:09 am

Last night I found the most amazing bespoke shoe store on Etsy called Goodbye Folk who are based in Mexico City.  In 10 days you can have the most beautiful custom-made shoes in your possession.  My favouites are the robin’s egg blue ankle booties above, (I’ve been having a serious blue moment lately!) lined in gorgeous red leather, priced at $350.

I would wear these booties with some blood-red or wine coloured tights; a vintage oversized men’s Aran sweater, probably in camel, and one of my oversized cowls which I happen to have in a contrasting blue/or one of my sleeveless fur vests, and with that I’ll be on my way!!  I will be treating myself to these beauties!!

In my opinion their shoes could be unisex, if you’re into brogues and low heeled booties.  The collection so far are mostly men’s shoes and boots, with a few women’s styles sprinkled in.   At this time they only have 27 items in their boutique; but they are 27 beautifully well made shoes.  Let’s stay tuned to see what else they come up with.

I’m also very much in love with the red patent and the floral brogues above, among a few others which have caught my eye.

Visit them at: http://www.etsy.com/shop/goodbyefolk

Colour Block Monday…

In Daily Musings on June 25, 2012 at 10:23 am

Hi Daahlings! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Mine was a very productive one.  I spent most of the weekend taking photos of my inventory for my new Etsy store (now to upload!).  As some of you may know, taking photos of clothes (or anything you want to post online) is a very time-consuming business; you’ve got to take a few shots in order to get 1 good one; so when you’re trying to add at least 5 images of an item, that’s a lot of shots.  I hope you’re weekend was as productive and lovely as mine, and that you are going to do wonderful things in this new week.

I found the photo above on one of my favourite sites, Pinterest, the yellow dress, the turquoise bag, the shoes, this photo is in my opinion, Perfect!! This is what colour blocking is all about. I thought it was the perfect image for a Monday morning.

This is my mood for today:

I hope you will be too!

Also, remember to enter the Maylana’s Closet L’Oreal Giveaway https://maylanascloset.com/2012/06/20/maylanas-loreal-giveaway/ ~ Ends Friday June 29th.

Lancome’s New Star…

In Daily Musings on June 22, 2012 at 11:27 am

Don’t you just love Betty Boop? Ms. Boop is Lancome‘s new star for the  Hypnôse Star mascara, which is coming soon.  The mascara was inspired by the diva herself.  Betty Boop showed up on the scene in the 1930’s and is still going strong 82 years later!

A Scorcher!!!

In Daily Musings on June 22, 2012 at 10:38 am

A delicious Pimms Cup

It is absolutely scorching here in DC! We were up to 98 degrees on Wednesday, and yesterday, WeatherBug said we hit 100!!! It’s not cute, because at these temperatures, everything is wilting, including me. It’s a little hard to look chic while melting, unless you’re lounging at the pool at the King & Grove Tides Hotel (one of my favourites) in Miami.  So to keep you cool, here is one of my favourite summer time beverages, which is called a Pimms Cup  http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/pimms-cup-recipe/index.html

Also another variation of this recipe, (which is the recipe my sister taught me) is to pour approximately 2 ounces of Pimms No.1 in a tall glass and then fill the rest of the glass with D&G Jamaican Ginger Beer, add a slice of lime and… Cheers!

This is where I need to be ~ the King & Grove Tides Hotel in South Beach, Miami ~ click for details

Stay cool, drinks lots of water and enjoy your Pimms Cup!

Smooches!

Estee Lauder And The “Together” Breasts…

In Daily Musings on June 19, 2012 at 11:24 am

When I opened the latest issue of “Harper’s Bazaar” and saw this ad campaign, my mind went absolutely blank, I truly did not know what to think about this ad; and I still don’t know how I really feel about it.  Breast Cancer is such a serious and most times fatal disease, that it made me wonder what the Estee Lauder Breast Cancer Foundation was thinking when their ad people came up with this 1 page spread.  Maybe I’ve got a dirty mind, but the first thing I thought after the initial shock was soft porn (like I said, maybe I’ve got a dirty mind!)

I myself ask what were they thinking, because as a creative person, I’m really interested in what the thought process was to come up with this shot.  I am far from a prude (at least in my opinion) and I’m one of the most open people I know (my sister will attest to this), but I just don’t think this ad sends the right message, what is the message?  When I think of breast cancer, I don’t think of nubile, full-lipped young women under 20, with high perky breasts (I’m not saying it cannot happen to a young woman);  but I think of the pain, constant medications, chemo, loss of  hair, and families trying to come to terms with what’s happening to a loved one.

I think of going for your mammogram, waiting and then freaking out when you get that phone call, telling you that you need to come back, because the image wasn’t clear or they couldn’t see properly or they saw something.  A version of this scenario happened to both myself and my sister, and in my sister’s case, twice!  We were both blessed that there was nothing serious, but the anguish of waiting was awful.  I’ve also had other friends go though this, its nerve-racking.

Apparently this ad has been around since last year, but I’ve never seen it until recently (where was I?).  This campaign was staged by renowned fashion photographer Michael Thompson, who has contributed to high-end magazines, such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair to name a few.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions regarding this ad; I’d like to have an open dialogue if possible.  No one’s answer/opinion is right or wrong, I’d just love to know your thoughts.  In your opinion does it send a clear message?  Is it an artful way of talking about Breast Cancer or is it just plain offensive to you?

Let’s talk!
