The Ultimate Black Leggings…

In New Loves! on February 8, 2012 at 11:24 am

Are by Sassybax!  Black leggings are a staple of every fashionista’s wardrobe.  This simple item can be dressed up or down. Start with a pair of good quality leggings, which have the right texture and thickness, there is nothing worse than a pair in cheap thin material.  With your leggings you can start with a turtle neck, V-neck or crew neck and then throw on any combination of items over it.  Try a wrap dress, an oversized sweater, a tuxedo jacket, a shift dress, a mini, your options are endless. It’s all about layering.  In the spring swap out the sweaters for tank tops or camisoles and then add a cute light weight dress with a cardi or jacket.  Try different pieces until you get your look, and always wear the right boots/shoes!  An ankle boot or knee/over the knee boot is preferable, (especially in fall/winter) if you have to wear a shoe, wear a high-heeled Mary Jane or closed toe pump. Wearing sandals can get tricky, because  if you don’t do it right, it can make you look like a “working girl”, you’ve got to know what you’re doing here ladies.  The important thing is to find a look that works for your shape and size and is completely flattering to you.  The ultimate dress up, is to throw on a fur coat/jacket, some high-heeled over the knee boots, a piece of statement jewelry and your most adored handbag and your good to go!  This combination is a shout out to the most stylish woman I know who is very special to me back home in London.

While on my own continuous quest for the perfect leggings, I came across the Sassybax range.  These leggings are something else. They are of high quality fabric and the most important thing is they give you a little lift and tuck where necessary (always a good thing!), giving you a smooth overall  appearance.  There are two versions, the bottom lifting  and the cigarette pant.  Follow this link and take a look  for yourself. http://www.joyus.com/shop/category/apparel/catalog/1-50816/sassybax-cigarette-pants?vp=169

Available at SaksFreshpair and other online stores.

Where’s My Birkin??

In Maylana's Dream List on February 6, 2012 at 11:48 am

The ultimate bag of all handbags for me would be a Hermes Birkin bag.  This is the dream handbag that every fashionista worth her salt wants to own. These bags start at approximately  $9,000 and keep going up and up and up!!  The elusive Birkin bag is so sought after as a status symbol by women worldwide that the French fashion house supposedly has a two-year waiting list for potential owners… The bag I’d love to own is the Birkin ostrich skin bag, which runs about $45,000,  yes I said $45,000!!! There’s actually a book “Bringing Home The Birkin by Michael Tonello, available at Amazon.com, telling you how to bypass the 2 year waiting list  and the fun he had tracking down this elusive bag.

The Birkin bag is truly serious business.  Since this bag is nowhere  in my budget right now or in the very near future, I’m going to have to settle for this…

It's True!!

The Birkin is obviously my ultimate dream list item, hey a woman can daydream can’t she?  It’s on my Diva List of overly expensive items I’m allowed to dream about. You should have a dream list too. On this list you can add any  number of wonderful things you’d like to own or do. and then create a bucket list of all the things you’d like to eventually accomplish. Dream of absolutely anything you want. Put it in your journal, write it down, you never know, you may hit the lottery.  When I make/win my first million, in this life time or the next (probably the next) I plan to have my own Birkin.   Happy Monday darlings!

How Beautiful….

In Daily Musings on January 31, 2012 at 3:11 pm

These ladies look!  Queens of their domain. All of them regal and proud in their finery.  A friend of mine posted this on Facebook today, and I just had to share. The question my friend asked was, “What do you see when you look at this photo?”  What I saw was how proud they are, they look noble and confident. They also look as though they’ve seen a lot.  There is also an air of total grace, a sense of togetherness and a sense of family; whether they’re related or not, they’ll stick together through thick and thin.  As I said to my friend…  “I’d love to wear one of  these dresses with a pair of 5″ heels and call it a day” Maybe with my Jeffrey Campbell Lita shoes, don’t you think? Enjoy your Tuesday afternoon.

Proud black women in their finest!

Loving Carol’s Daughter…

In New Loves! on January 31, 2012 at 10:51 am

Ladies, hopefully you are pampering yourselves on a daily basis because you are well deserving.  A product I’ve been using for years is the Carol’s Daughter range of body products.  I remember visiting Carol’s Daughter when Lisa Price had a tiny store on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn (well before the gentrification).  A good friend and I used to make the trek from Long Island to Brooklyn, just to buy her products.  At the time I had locs and used to use her Loc Butter religiously.  I’m proud of Lisa in what she has achieved, from making the products in her kitchen to now being a major player in the beauty arena.  For me as a small business women, she is a good example of what you can accomplish with hard work and determination and showing me, it can be done!  My favourite body treats right now is the Goddess Flower Shea Souffle, just the name alone, makes you feel like royalty (which you are!).  This product is a rich concoction of coconut and grapeseed oils, with Vitamin E thrown in for good measure. I also like the Ecstasy Body Butter and the Sugar-Dipped Vanilla Body Cream, which are both pretty luxurious!  I promise you’ll  fall in love.  http://www.carolsdaughter.com/

I Love My Star Sign…

In New Loves! on January 27, 2012 at 1:31 pm

For those of  you who know me, you know I love big statement rings. My rose quartz ring is always a conversation starter and I treasure it dearly (see pic below).  After browsing through my absolute  favourite shopping site, Etsy, I came across this fabulous Aquarius statement ring. I love being an Aquarian, we’re quirky, artistic, kind, moody, forgiving, a whole bunch of wonderful things! The quote by the sellar regarding this ring was perfect… “You know when you’re at a swinging party and some slick stud sidles up with the old school classic, ‘what’s your sign”‘ As far as I’m concerned this ring is perfect for addressing this question with a elegant flash of the hand! For those of you wanting to make your own statement, there are other sign rings, as well as other beautiful and original accessories at LarkinandLarkin at www.etsy.com

My Beautiful Rose Quartz Ring - Bracelet post coming soon!

I’m Loving Jeffrey Campbell’s…

Lita Shoe!  Well it looks like Lita is here for a while and not going anywhere. Lita had a grand debut  in July 2010 and even had a first birthday party last year; and she’s still going strong.  There have been so many variations of this shoe boot you don’t know where to start, suede, leather, metallic, skin print, studs, lace, patterns, fur, you name it, Lita’s rocking it. There is not a colour way or fabric Lita doesn’t come in. I will be honest,  I didn’t know how I felt about her when she first came out, I had a kind of love/hate relationship with her. Then I saw her dressed in purple suede (see pic), in pink suede,  in turquoise suede and snake-skin (should I go on?) and I was sold.  Black seems to be the hardest colour to come by and is on back order in some places.  Now, nearly 2 years later I’m trying to decide which Lita to buy first (I need at least two).  There’s a huge Lita following on Instagram  (you can also follow me there on iPhone/iPad under Maylana) or you can check her out at  www.jeffreycampbellshoes.com, Nordstrom, www.solestruck.com and www.revolveclothing.com where there are great selections.  I’m about to get my Lita on, I’ll let you know what I end up with. Smooches!

My Fragrance For 2012 Is…

In New Loves! on January 24, 2012 at 3:03 pm

I’ve decided upon Bvlgari Mon Jasmine Noir.  This is truly a beautiful fragrance which is already a classic for me.  This is the lighter version to the much heavier and in my opinion pungent Jasmine Noir, which reminds me too much of Opium by Yves Saint Laurent (remember that one ladies?) I’ve been a fan of Bvlgari fragrances for some time, especially the Bvlgari Rose Essentielle.  Mon Jasmine Noir has top notes of golden citron and floral lily of the valley with of course the elegant Jasmine. Sprayed lightly (very important, you don’t want everyone in the elevator to pass out) you can have yourself a daily “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” moment. Treat yourself! Available at Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus, Saks

A Very Elegant Fragrance

Love These…

“New Loves” will be all things fashion or otherwise, loved by me, I’ll tell you where to purchase and what I think if and when I buy the item featured.  Hit the “Like” button if you like them too… Happy Monday!

Here’s the first featured item…  Designer flats you can fit in your handbag & wear all day, every day or when you need a rest from your 5″ heels.  I just discovered these gorgeous flats on Facebook, they were also featured on the Oprah Gift Finder. I love the turquoise non slip soles and the gorgeous packaging.  Starting at $155 at www.Tiek.com  Take a look at all the fabulous colours and styles (leathers and metallics).  Yes these are expensive, but as far as I’m concerned, we’re worth it!! I will be treating myself to a lilac pair or these fuschia pink ones, they’ll look gorgeous with my daily head to toe black outfits when I need them.

Fold up and put in your handbag

Nearly There…

In Daily Musings on January 15, 2012 at 11:21 am

Well after 3 days of trying to get a handle on this cold, I’m now about 75% back to normal. I plan to be at 100% by Wednesday. I will not be sick for my birthday (1/21 for those of you who may not know).  To cheer myself up, I decided to see what’s out there in the shoe world and I found these!!!

They appear to be very much in demand, but I’m determined to find a pair.  I also found the lace up version.  They can be found out Urbanoutffiters.com and Solestruck.com The quest is on!!

Love These Boots!!
